Levi Leipheimer, Take Two... California native Levi Leipheimer riding for Team Astana in 2008 stormed to victory for the second year in the most dramatic and exciting Tour of California yet. It was also one of the flashiest and PR-driven races in years as 40 year-old retired Italian Superstar Mario Cipollini returned to the peloton riding for Rock Racing. Cipo, Quick Step’s Tom Boonen and Paolo Bettini, CSC’s Fabian Cancellara and American stars George Hincapie and Christian Vandevelde a host of other big names were cheered by fans as they made their way south along the spectacular California coast. Epic Stage Wins, Epic Weather! First, Fabian Cancellara got things rolling in familiar style, torching the field in the prologue through Palo Alto to Stanford, and from then on it was a race of shifting leads and tight margins of victory. The turning point came on the biggest climbing day of the race, when Levi Leipheimer took control. It’s often remarked how much Levi looks like Lance Armstrong, at least with his helmet on, and on that day he looked more like Lance than ever. Issuing orders and paced by “Chechu” Rubiera, Leipheimer and an elite selection powered up Mt. Hamilton. At the end of the day, he had authoritatively claimed the overall lead. Only the 24km individual time trial on stage 5 stood in the way of victory, but the hulking figures of Fabian Cancellara, who trailed by only 13 seconds, and the talented Slipstream trio of Robert Millar, Christian Vandevelde, and David Zabriskie were all still within striking distance. Then came Stage 4, 135 miles from Seaside to San Luis Obispo, and the weather turned nasty with heavy rain and 35mph head winds. After an epic seven-hour journey, Levi’s Team Astana controlled the day as early breakaways fell apart to attrition. Leipheimer showed the class of a champion, putting significant time into each of his rivals before the all-important time trial in Solvang. At Solvang, Leipheimer won the crucial 15-mile time trial with an astounding time of 30’46, beating rival David Millar and Fabian Cancellara by 29” and 1’05 respectively. While two attack-filled days were to follow, Levi had this one just about sewn up, but that didn’t stop the action...
